1st January celebrated as Cloth Day

Hello......
While the rest of the Ghaziabad, like elsewhere, would be busy uncorking the champagne and partying the night away on New Year's eve, the PRERNA Ek Pahal Ek Aasha team would be driving down the streets, distributing woollens and warmth to pavement dwellers until the next morning.
New Year's Eve, observed as “Cloth Day” by Prerna, is one of the latest initiative. The Cloth Day is an extension of what we do on New Year's Eve, and
indeed throughout the winter- of driving to random places and distributing clothes to the needy.

But in order to get the public involved and sensitise them to helping the needy, we have decided to celeberate 1st January as Cloth Day. On which we ask people to donate at least one piece of cloth which will go on to give warmth to an unknown person shivering in the cold, in some corner of the country.

What we are simply saying is that donate at least one piece of cloth and start your New Year on a different note... on a more noble note, by clothing a poor person on the road, in an urban slum or in a village.

We urge you to be a part of “Cloth Day” by organizing a collection camp to collect Clothes , School related material, eatables etc by motivating others / helping us to distribute clothing to needy ones .

We distributed clothing to 2009 pavement / Slum dwellers on Cloth Day .

Happy New year 2009

RAGS TO PADS ( Sanitary Napkins Project)

Prerna Ek Pahal Ek Aasha’s latest Project to utlize donated cotton clothing for creating sanitary napkins is based on the knowledge that many woman and hence their families – suffer major health consequences on account of using unhygienic cloth during menstruating days .This can lead to infections which can cause multi - organ Failure ,infertility and in certain circumstances cervical cancer. The consequences can also be multifold,as an infection can have an effect not only on the lives of her children born and unborn. The situation in India is not one to be taken lightly ;indeed India has one of the highest infant and mortality rates in the world.Since menstruation is considered to be ‘pollution’women use the dirtiest cloth in the house – cloth that has been used to clean the floors, the bathrooms. And because it is imperative that the cloth be hidden from the neighbours,it does not ever see the light of the day. Furthermore , there are usually 2 or 3 women in a household all using the same cloth” And this context of shame ,of extreme health – risks ,we often overlook this reality and give them lectures on reproductive health and maternity care.We still have a long way to go ,but providing some clean cloth is a good first step”. A woman uses a piece of blouse and died of tetanus due to hook inside .
Prerna Ek Pahal Ek Aasha is providing clean cloth cloth / napkins to rur
al / slum woman and is actively campaigning in rural & urban India to generate awareness in this taboo issue.
